Mario
The glorious hero that saved the entire kingdom countless times against the beastly King Bowser. Mario was by trade a plumber before being mystically whisked with his brother into the Mushroom Lands. Once there, he immediately fell head over heels in love with Princess Peach. But he is a man of few words, and before he could approach her, she was abducted right before his very eyes. The people begged him to save their Princess, and off he went into adventure and danger. With an immeasurable source of bravery, he fought all the Koopa Forces until he finally met and defeated the great King Bowser. When he returned with Princess Peach, the people rejoiced and cheered their champions.
He is a humble man, and so he refused their many gifts to him. Instead he wished to live in the Mushroom Castle alongside Princess Peach. There were many naysayers, as Mario was a lowly commoner. To keep everyone satisfied, he swore that only when the people accepted their relationship would he sleep in her room. For now he rests outside of the castle wall in his own little cottage.
No one was sure exactly how Mario and Luigi were abducted, but on the night in question many reported the iconic "Mamma Mia" being yelled many times, followed by a loud thumping sounds. Then, silence. The Mushroom Kingdom is falling apart with fear in his absence. He must return and soon, lest the people destroy themselves before the Koopas get their chance.

LUigi
A plumber as his brother, Luigi is the younger of the two, and he is loyal to Mario to the very end. So much so that many have accused Luigi as not having a voice of his own. The joke being that Luigi is almost incapable of silence for more than a few seconds. When Mario went to save the Princess, Luigi went with him. When Mario fought off the Koopa Forces, Luigi fought with him. When Mario saved Princess Peach and returned to the Mushroom Kingdom, Luigi followed closely behind. He is very proud of his brother and wishes only the best for him.
As time went by, Luigi began to adventure out on his own. His quests were less known, but just as perilous. In fact, if it weren't for the popularity Mario attained from his relationship with the Princess, Luigi would have been seen as an equal. Along his travels he eventually came across a haunted minor kingdom on the fringes of the Mushroom Lands called Sarasaland Kingdom. The area was being plagued by the infamous King Boo, and Luigi along with a barrage of ghost hunting equipment expelled every last ghost from the area. Princess Daisy is the ruling heir of Sarasaland Kingdom, and she held a great celebration in Luigi's name. Rumors have circulated about their relationship, mostly about how since Mario has Peach, Luigi has to have his Daisy.
His disappearance happened alongside his brother Mario. Some say they heard Luigi's jolly battle cry as well as Mario's "Mamma Mia", but no one can confirm this. What is true is that Luigi was captured by King Bowser as well, and with both Mario Brothers in captivity, the Mushroom Lands are in need of new heroes.

Princess Peach
True to the spirit of her ancestors, Princess Peach has always been a reserved, regal ruler of the Mushroom Lands. Her beauty is said to be surpassed by none, her movement more graceful than a swan's, and her smile sunnier than a midsummer's day. She is truly a joy to be around, and she shows kindness to all of her subjects equally. This is the person she has tried to be, but sometimes she has made some harsh decisions. One being the refusal of King Bowser's marriage request. Before the tyrant invaded her kingdom and abducted her, he formally requested her hand to end the strife between their empires. It would have been a chance at peace between the two family lines, but she refused. Not only because the power struggle that would have been played out between the two, but because she believed the Koopa's not to be worthy of her bloodline. The latter reason was hidden from public knowledge.
During her abduction, she kept her reserve and refused King Bowser's advances, even when he swore he'd take out his rage on her subjects. She would have gladly died to keep her spirit pure, but then Mario came to save her instead. She loved the way the silent warrior exuded both generosity and bravery through those kind eyes, and his strong body as a whole was very attractive to her. After her return to the Mushroom Castle, she was pleasantly surprised when Mario requested to stay in the castle with her. Had it not been for the shocked reaction of her fellow aristocrats, she would have consented. As it was, Mario sensed her troubles and offered to live outside the castle walls. With her magics, she would transport herself from her room every night to spend time with her otherworldly hero.
Now that Mario and Luigi have vanished, she has become very nervous and fearful. She knows that her subjects are nowhere trained enough to be an army to challenge the Koopas, but if Mario doesn't return soon, she will put on the garb of General and invade the Koopa Fortress herself if need be.

Toad
For as long as the Toadstool line has been in existence, there has always been a servant bloodline to help protect the royals from all dangers if possible. These guardians were of strong stock, and they swore to protect their wards even if it mean their own deaths. They were well respected, and the greatest of them went down in history. They were known as the Toadies. After generations of peace, the guardian's descendants have grown to be weak and small. Without anyone to oppose them, they became more and more politicians than warriors. Their loyalties are still unquestionable, but their swords are dull and rusted.
Toad (a title only given to the bodyguard of the ruling Toadstool Royalty) is the most respected of the servants. His quick wit and positive attitude allowed him to climb up the political ranks quickly, earning him the title of Princess Peach's Ward. When she was abducted, he swore to do all within his power to save her. Which honestly was very little, but he did manage to help the Mario Brothers time and time again on their quest. He helped them gain allies, quash enemies, and safely venture around the dangerous lands. While he did not defeat King Bowser himself, Mario wouldn't have been able to do so without Toad.
Now that the Mario Brothers are gone but Princess Peach is still present, he has sworn not to leave her side, insisting that he can still be her guardian to the very end.

Toadsworth
Toadsworth is another member of the servant bloodline, but where as Toad helps the Princess socially, Toadsworth helps her politically. He is much, much older than he appears to be, and his wisdom has aided Princess Peach on more than one occasion. It is rumored that he was the one to transport the Mario Brothers from another world into this one, but that is just speculation; a rumor that makes him chuckle when asked about. What is known is that he used his connections within the Mushroom Lands to allow Mario and Luigi to venture off on a rescue mission without the entire Mushroom Army marching up behind them. He believed that only the plumbers would go unnoticed by King Bowser until it was too late for the tyrant. His gamble paid off, and after she returned, the Princess Peach ordered a statue of his likeness be made and erected in front of the Mushroom Castle.
Now that the Mario Brothers have been abducted themselves, his supporters have wavered. Without the heroes of before to fight off the Koopas, they believe only a full scale retaliation will prove the Mushroom Lands powerful enough to protect their own. He knows this is a grave mistake, but he bides his time until new heroes come to save the day.

Princess Daisy
On the outskirts of the Mushroom Lands lies a territory only known as the Sarasaland Kingdom. The political wars between the Toadstools and the Koopas rarely interfere with daily life there, but that's not to say there aren't dangers of another kind there. These lands are steeped in mysticism and bloodshed, and the people there have been hardened by the terrors of the night. Where as the Toadstools are pristine rulers and the Koopas are ruthless tyrants, the ruling bloodline the Sarasas are noble soldiers ready to fight at a moment's notice.
When Luigi entered these lands and swore to rid them of the ghostly menace King Boo, they laughed at him. Princess Daisy Sarasa did not. She could see a true warrior's spirit burning deep within the lean, handsome plumber, and she ordered her people to assist him in anyway that they could. They gave Luigi an experimental vacuum weapon to trap the ghosts in, and off he went into the night. The next morning when he came back with a vacuum bag full of night terrors, Princess Daisy knew she had found her knight in green wool. When Luigi left to return to his brother, Princess Daisy came with him. While they have not yet shown affection towards each other publicly, the Sarasaland Kingdom have already started to prepare for a wedding.
After Luigi and Mario's disappearance, Princes Daisy went back to her homelands to rally her most fearsome soldiers. She planned to come to her hero's aid, but in her absence King Boo managed to escape and returned to wreak havoc on the Sarasaland Kingdom. Once the Ghost Menace is taken care of, nothing will keep her from storming the Koopa Fortress.

yoshi
After Mario and Luigi had defeated King Bowser the first time, they soon realized that King Bowser would never stop abducting the Princess Peach and stashing her away in foreign lands. Each time they had to save the Princess, it was in a new place with new creatures and new dangers. On one particular journey, they came across a strange, large, speckled egg. They didn't know what to do with it. Seeing no mother around to keep it warm, Mario put the egg in his shirt on top of his warm belly. That night the egg cracked and a tame, loyal reptile emerged. It imprinted on Mario as its mother, and it aided the Mario Brothers in their continuous quest to save the Princess.
As it grew, Mario realized the beast could be ridden like a horse and that it could eat almost anything. He rode the beast into battle time and time again, caring for and respecting it as if it was his own brother. It eventually grew to maturation, and with an increasing intelligence it named itself Yoshi (the same name of his species) and acted as a foreign diplomat to the Yoshi tribes and the Mushroom Kingdom.
Now that his surrogate mother Mario is gone, he has left the castle in search of ways to topple over every single Koopa stronghold. No one knows exactly where he is, but some suggest that he has made it all the way to the Waterlands.
